Trudeau announced that he reached an agreement with Trump to postpone the implementation of 25% tariffs for at least 30 days.

In exchange for this, Trudeau promised to curb the flow of drugs into the United States.
Трюдо сообщил, что согласовал с Трампом отсрочку введения 25%-ных тарифов «по крайней мере на 30 дней».

The United States will postpone the implementation of a 25-percent tariff on Canadian goods "for at least 30 days," announced Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

According to him, he reached this agreement with US President Donald Trump during a phone call.

In exchange, the authorities are expected to intensify their fight against drug smuggling, Trudeau explained.

"Canada will implement our $1.3 billion border security plan – enhancing the border with new helicopters, technology, and personnel, improving coordination with our American partners, and increasing resources to stop the flow of the synthetic drug fentanyl," – wrote Trudeau on social media platform X.

He promised that nearly 10,000 individuals will be involved in these measures.

Additionally, Trudeau mentioned that Canada will establish a "fentanyl czar" position and will list drug cartels as terrorist organizations.

Furthermore, the country will have joint forces with the US to combat organized crime, fentanyl trafficking, and money laundering.

"I also signed a new directive for intelligence services focused on organized crime and fentanyl, which will be supported by an investment of $200 million," Trudeau added.

Trump noted that he is pleased with the outcomes of the negotiations with the Canadian Prime Minister, which will help "put an end to the deadly drug crisis."

"The imposition of tariffs will be suspended for 30 days to see if a final economic agreement with Canada can be structured," the US President concluded.

On February 1, Trump imposed a 25-percent tariff on all Canadian goods, except for energy resources, which will have a 10% tariff.

A tariff was also implemented on goods from Mexico (25%) and China (10%).

Background. As previously reported, the President of Mexico managed to negotiate with Trump for a one-month suspension of tariffs. In exchange, Mexico also promised to strengthen security on the northern border with the help of 10,000 National Guard troops to prevent the illegal trafficking of drugs, including fentanyl, from Mexico to the US.
