German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, emphasized the importance of continued support for Ukraine, noting that Europe and the West "must do everything to protect and uphold the fundamental principles of the international order."
"The most fundamental principle is the inviolability of borders, and by the way, this is relevant everywhere. Anyone who challenges this principle is challenging the rules-based order. That is why President Putin must not succeed in the aggressive war he has unleashed against Ukraine," Scholz said.
"Although the situation in Ukraine is complex, it is often overlooked that Putin is currently not succeeding there. He wanted to divide Ukraine and the EU, but instead today Ukraine is a candidate for EU membership. He wanted NATO to be divided and weak, yet today NATO is united and has two new members – Sweden and Finland."
"He aimed to subjugate Ukraine through military means, but instead the Ukrainian army is much stronger than before the war and is equipped with Western weapons. This is primarily due to the brave people of Ukraine, but it is also a result of our support. This support is and will remain the path to a true and just peace in Ukraine," the German Chancellor noted.
He stressed that no decisions regarding Ukraine should be made without its participation.
"Nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine. The final word must be spoken by the men and women of Ukraine," Scholz added.
Moreover, he commented on the actions of the new U.S. administration under Donald Trump.
Here are some of his key points on this matter:
* "In a world that is constantly teetering on the brink of a nervous breakdown due to social media, we need cool heads. Not every press conference, not every tweet should plunge us into a heated existential debate, and this is also true following the change of government that took place in Washington."
* "The U.S. is our closest ally outside of Europe, and I will do everything to ensure it remains so, because it is in our mutual interests, and it is necessary for peace and security worldwide."
* "It is absolutely clear that President Trump will keep the world on edge in the coming years in the areas of energy, climate, trade, foreign policy, and security policy. He reiterated this yesterday."
* "We can and will deal with this, without hysteria and outrage, but also without false calm and what they want to hear."
