Ukraine's ambassador to the U.S. stated that Washington has not discussed the possibility of holding elections with Kyiv this year.

Markarova also states that the embassy is working on arranging several meetings between the teams of Zelensky and Trump.

The United States has not discussed with the Ukrainian side the need to hold elections by the end of 2025. This was stated by Ukraine's Ambassador to the U.S., Oksana Markarova, in an interview with “Suspilne.”

She clarified that if the issue of elections is raised, Ukraine will be prepared for discussion.

“Ukraine and America are free countries. Everyone is entitled to express their thoughts. If this issue comes up, we are certainly ready for that discussion, as we have done before,” said Markarova.

“We would be very pleased if elections were to take place in Ukraine, as it would mean that we have won this war,” the ambassador noted.

She also mentioned that the Ukrainian embassy in the U.S. is working on a series of meetings between the teams of President Zelensky and President Trump.

When asked whether there would also be a meeting between Zelensky and Trump, Markarova responded:

“We are always preparing both meetings and calls. This takes some time. The contacts that Ukraine has with the new U.S. president's team are far greater than those with other countries.”

She added that the embassy has good contacts with Secretary of State Rubio and National Security Advisor Bolton, with whom they worked even before Trump's election.

On February 1, Trump's special representative for the Russian-Ukrainian war, General Keith Kellogg, stated that the U.S. wants elections to occur in Ukraine soon after a “ceasefire” agreement is reached.

“In most democratic countries, elections take place during wartime. I believe this is very important. I think it’s good for democracy. This is the essence of strong democracy, where you have more than one person who can potentially run,” Kellogg said.

In early January, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that holding elections in Ukraine would only be possible after the war ends or after changes in legislation.

President Volodymyr Zelensky previously stated that Ukraine could hold elections this year if hostilities cease and reliable security guarantees are established to deter Russia from resuming aggression.
