On December 25, the EstLink 2 power transmission line between Estonia and Finland went offline for unknown reasons, and operators are working to resolve the issue.

According to ERR,

at 12:26 PM on Wednesday, EstLink 2 was disconnected due to an emergency. The Estonian operator Elering announced that the specific cause of the problem is currently unknown, and they are coordinating with their Finnish colleagues from Fingrid to determine the details.

At the same time, the operator added that there is no threat to the stable electricity supply in Estonia, and if necessary, required volumes will be secured through alternative means.

This year, the line has already experienced a major issue – it was disconnected in January, and repair work extended until September, costing over 30 million euros. A detailed report on what occurred at that time is expected to be released shortly.

The length of EstLink 2 is over 170 km, of which approximately 12 km runs underground on land in Estonia, 147 km runs along the bottom of the Gulf of Finland, and another 14 km is an overhead line on land in Finland.

It is worth noting that in November, two communication cables running along the bottom of the Baltic Sea were damaged simultaneously. The investigation into the circumstances is still ongoing, with a Chinese cargo ship under scrutiny, which passed over them around the time the damages occurred. After the incident, it remained anchored off the coast of Denmark for over a month until Chinese authorities allowed Swedish law enforcement to board for investigative actions.

Background. Earlier, Mind reported that European authorities suspect Russia of orchestrating another act of sabotage in the Baltic Sea after two telecommunications cables were damaged earlier in the week.
