French filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius has authored a book about Russia's war against Ukraine and the Ukrainian defenders. He will illustrate the book with his own drawings.
This was reported by “UP.Culture”.
In 2024, Michel Hazanavicius visited the front line in Ukraine. He traveled to Irpin, the frontline, and also to Kovel, where his grandmother Leah Verba was born.
Following the onset of the full-scale Russian invasion, he made several trips to Ukraine, assisting in fundraising for the country's recovery and becoming an ambassador for the Ukrainian fundraising platform United24.
In the summer of 2023, the director organized a charity auction featuring personal items from globally renowned stars, raising €125,000, which he donated for the reconstruction of a hospital in Izium.
Hazanavicius also raised funds to restore a damaged house on Davydchuka Street in Irpin.
“The next thing I did was write a book. Last year, I visited the front line in Ukraine, and I wrote a book about the Ukrainian defenders with my own drawings. It will be released in February,” the director shared in an interview.
“Every Ukrainian is a hero and deserves a book or a film to be made about them,” Hazanavicius noted after his visit to Ukraine.
His book will also be presented in Ukraine. All proceeds from its sales will be directed to help Ukrainians.
The director won an Oscar in 2012 for Best Film and Directing with the film “The Artist.”
Hazanavicius has been passionate about drawing since he was 10 years old. He utilized this long-standing hobby to illustrate what he witnessed in Ukraine and while working on a new animated film about World War II, which will be released in Ukrainian theaters on January 30.
