President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky is convinced that now is the time to establish a united European Armed Forces.
He stated this during his speech at the Munich Security Conference.
“I believe in Europe. And you should believe. And I urge you to act – for yourselves and for Europe – for the people of Europe, your nations, your homes, your children, and our shared future,” Zelensky noted.
The president reminded that Ukrainian defenders, supported by other countries, are currently holding back Russia. However, it is important to recognize the possibility that the U.S. could say “no” to Europe regarding matters that threaten it.
“Many leaders have spoken about the need for Europe to have its own armed forces – a European Army. I believe that the time for this has come. The European Armed Forces must be established,” he added.
The head of state also addressed NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, indicating that such Armed Forces would not replace the Alliance.
“It’s about ensuring Europe’s contribution to our partnership is equal to America’s contribution. And we need the same approach when it comes to diplomacy – working together for peace,” he clarified.
Background. Earlier, Mind reported that since NATO membership is not currently being considered for Ukraine, it must obtain another reliable security guarantee – an army of 1.5 million servicemen.
