Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz urged respect for Ukraine's "sovereign independence" in future negotiations with Russia.
Scholz stated this during his speech on the second day of the Munich Security Conference, as reported by DW.
"I believe we all agree that Russia's war against Ukraine must end as soon as possible. Hundreds of thousands of people have died or been injured," he said.
Furthermore, he emphasized that the country must be able to defend itself effectively in the event of a peace settlement through extensive military assistance.
"At the end of any settlement reached through negotiations, Ukraine must have armed forces capable of repelling any new Russian attack. In financial, material, and logistical terms, this will be a huge challenge," noted Scholz.
He warned that a Russian victory or the disintegration of Ukraine would not bring peace. Even a dictated peace would never find support from Germany.
"Peace will only be achieved when Ukraine's sovereignty is ensured. Thus, a peace dictated under pressure will never receive our support," emphasized Scholz.
The German Chancellor added that Russia is already escalating the situation with dangerous actions against countries in the transatlantic alliance. He mentioned sabotage of underwater cables and other infrastructure, arson, disinformation, and attempts to manipulate democratic elections.
