On February 15, firefighters from the State Emergency Service continue to extinguish the fire affecting the filler of the outer shell of the new safe confinement at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
According to a post on Facebook, the State Agency of Ukraine for the Management of the Exclusion Zone has reported this.
From 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM, five employees of the State Emergency Service and two units of equipment were working at the scene. Since 7:00 AM, 40 personnel from the State Emergency Service and eight units of equipment have been engaged in firefighting efforts.
In the complex of the "Shelter" facility and the new safe confinement (NSC-OU), significant structural damage has been recorded, covering an area of approximately 15 m², along with defects in the shell without total destruction amounting to 200 m². The internal filler of the shell has been damaged, and there are existing failures in the bolted connections. The joints of the upper part of the GTO structures have been deformed.
The agency also reported that no deterioration in the radiation situation at the NSC-OU site or at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant overall has been observed. No release of radioactive products beyond the established boundaries has been detected.
