The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has laid off over 300 employees from the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA).

CNN reports this, citing four sources familiar with the situation writes.

According to the publication's sources, the layoffs affected staff working at nuclear weapons development facilities, overseeing contractors, and inspecting nuclear warheads. The cuts also impacted employees at NNSA headquarters who were involved in developing technical requirements and guidelines for contractors engaged in nuclear weapon production.

One CNN source suggested that the layoffs were due to a lack of understanding among officials at the U.S. Department of Energy regarding the importance of these specialists' work.

“No one took the time to understand what we do and the significance of our work for the country's national security,” the source stated.

However, a representative from the Department of Energy denied reports of mass layoffs, asserting that “fewer than 50 individuals” were let go from NNSA and that the dismissed employees “primarily held administrative and clerical positions.”

Despite this, NNSA has already begun reviewing its decision regarding the layoffs and has initiated procedures to reinstate some of the dismissed employees.

A representative from the Department of Energy contested the number of layoffs, telling CNN that “fewer than 50 individuals” were “let go” from NNSA and that those terminated “primarily held administrative and clerical positions.”

Members of Congress have expressed their concerns to the Department of Energy regarding the layoffs at NNSA, a Congressional staff member informed CNN.

“Congress is in an uproar because it seems the Department of Energy was unaware that NNSA oversees the nuclear stockpile. Nuclear deterrence is the foundation of American security and stability. Period. Even very small breaches in maintaining that deterrence should greatly alarm people,” one source told the publication.
