Europe will stand with Ukraine for as long as necessary. This was assured by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, while speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Von der Leyen discussed the EU's stance on Ukraine in light of potential changes in US policy under Trump.

“I believe we must never forget how it all began. Ukraine is a sovereign state, and it has determined its future by expressing the desire to join the European Union. That is where it all started. The response to this was the invasion by its neighbor, Russia,” said the EC President.

“We must also never forget that this issue is not only about the security of Ukraine, but about the security of all of Europe,” she emphasized.

According to her, a frozen conflict will not lead to peace.

“No one wants peace more than the people of Ukraine. But they want a just and lasting peace. What they do not want is a frozen conflict that will flare up again a little later,” von der Leyen stressed.

“We will support Ukraine, no matter what happens next. It is important for us that Ukraine remains an independent state and that Ukraine makes decisions on its own territory. We stand with Ukraine for as long as necessary,” added the President of the European Commission.

She also responded to Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement.

“The agreement remains humanity's best hope. Therefore, Europe will continue to work with all countries that want to protect nature and stop global warming,” von der Leyen stated.
