The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, has officially transferred his powers to former Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa.

Michel wrote about this on X.

He noted that serving as the President of the Euro Council was a great honor for him and wished Costa all the best in his new role.

Costa, during his first speech as the head of the European Council, mentioned Ukraine, stating that peace in the country must be based on international law, as reported by European Pravda.

“We all aspire to peace. Especially the strong and heroic Ukrainian people. But peace cannot mean the tranquility of a graveyard. Peace cannot mean capitulation. Peace must not reward the aggressor. Peace in Ukraine must be just. It must be sustainable,” Costa declared.

The head of the Euro Council added that against this backdrop, the European Union must reaffirm its reputation as a peace project by "becoming stronger, more effective, more resilient, and more autonomous in the field of security and defense.”
